America will never forget 9-11, when 3,000 people were murdered in just one day. It has happened 15 years ago today but the memory of the 9/11 attack is not fading at all. We should still take the occasion to reflect on what has transpired since then. In many ways, there has been little change. The decade-long American war in Iraq has ended but Iraq is still suffering. The American led war in Afghanistan is still going on. Americans still live in fear of another terror attack. The terror networks still live on as before. The rise of ISIS adds a new chapter in their history. A large swathe of territory is actually controlled by those promoting international terrorism.
We, the people of the world, also still need to make sense of the terror attack which instantly changed the world at the start of the twenty-first century. Those who perpetrated the atrocity did not restrict their targeting to any particular group of people. They felt that it was okay for anybody who was within the borders of America to die. Even devout Muslims who might have been in the hijacked planes or the targeted buildings were not given any consideration. That shows a complete disregard for human life. The terrorists’ goals are also rather inscrutable. These seem to be merely about hatred of the West and spreading fear among the people there, which in turn fosters hatred of Muslims by Westerners.
The world must not give in to either of these two goals. There must be complete harmony between the Western world and the Islamic world. Only then will the campaign of the terrorists be defeated.
